Midthunder belongs to the Fort Peck Assiniboine Tribe of Fort Peck. She was born in the Navajo Nation in Shiprock, New Mexico, and eventually returned there after spending much of her early years living in Santa Fe, where she went to her school, the Academy for Technology and the Classics and where her mother was employed in a casting business. Amber has been identified as Native American on her father's family, and they are both an enrolled member of the Fort Peck Sioux Tribe. Amber's mom is an adopted which means that Amber has no idea of her ancestral lineage.
